Trail Experiences

The Twin Coast Cycle Trail offers more than just a ride between two coasts — it opens the door to a range of experiences just off the trail, from natural attractions to cultural sites and local favourites. If you’ve got time to spare, these extra stops are well worth including in your journey.

Natural Attractions

  • Lake Ōmāpere – Visible from parts of the trail near Ōkaihau, this is Northland’s largest lake. Especially beautiful at sunrise or misty mornings — a peaceful spot to pause.
  • Wairere Boulders (short detour from Horeke) – A unique geological reserve featuring basalt rock formations, native bush tracks, and a tranquil café. A popular add-on for riders finishing in Horeke.
  • Ngāwhā Springs (short detour from Kaikohe) – A natural geothermal hot springs complex known for its variety of mineral-rich pools. Perfect for a relaxing soak after a long day’s ride.

Local Food and Coffee

  • Trainspotter Café (Kawakawa) – Directly opposite the trail, offering coffee, cabinet food, and hot meals
  • Village Café (Ōkaihau) – Warm hospitality and generous portions in a classic Northland setting
  • Mint Café (Kaikohe) – Good coffee, fresh food, and bike-friendly facilities
  • Roadside produce stalls – Look out for seasonal produce or home baking, especially between Ōkaihau and Kaikohe.

Cultural & Historic

  • Te Hononga (Kawakawa) – Award-winning community and cultural centre with strong ties to Ngāti Hine
  • Bay of Islands Vintage Railway – Running alongside parts of the trail between Kawakawa and Taumarere
  • Kaikohe Pioneer Village – An easy stop with relocated heritage buildings, perfect for a break and some history
  • Mangungu Mission House (Horeke) – Just above the trail’s western end, this historic site overlooks the harbour where hundreds signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840

Bush & Scenic Stops

  • Short tracks near Ōkaihau – A few walking tracks lead to lookouts with views over farmland, bush, and Lake Ōmāpere
  • Shaded rest areas along the trail – Especially between Kawakawa and Kaikohe, with native bush and birdlife
  • Boardwalk through Horeke mangroves – A scenic final stretch with changing tides and harbour views
