Ride through wetlands, bush, farmland, and small towns, with plenty of great stops along the way. The full ride can be done in a day if you’re confident and well-prepared, but most riders choose to split it over two days to enjoy the trail at a more relaxed pace.

We offer transport options to make one-way rides simple, whether you’re starting from Opua, Horeke, or somewhere in between. We can also arrange luggage transfers so you can ride light while your gear meets you at your next stop.
Just let us know your plans and we’ll sort the logistics for you.
Section Ride Options
Opua to Kawakawa
This gentle, mostly flat section is perfect for families and casual riders. Following the old railway line, it features bridges, mangrove boardwalks, and the chance to see the vintage Bay of Islands train in action. Kawakawa is a great place to stop, with cafes, shops, and the famous Hundertwasser toilets.
Kawakawa to Kaikohe
A more varied ride with some gradual climbs, this section offers a good mix of scenery—rural farmland, forest, and old railway tunnels. It’s a favourite for those wanting a challenge without going too far off the beaten track. Kaikohe sits in the centre of the trail, making it a useful base for day rides in either direction.

Kaikohe to Okaihau
This is a shorter stretch that’s ideal if you’re looking for a relaxed afternoon ride. It passes through open farmland with gentle gradients and great views toward the west coast. A good pick for e-bike riders or those new to the trail.
Okaihau to Horeke
This final section includes some of the most peaceful riding on the trail. It winds through quiet countryside, past estuaries, and over the stunning boardwalks of the upper Hokianga Harbour. Horeke has a pub and wharf at the trail’s western end—an ideal spot to finish your ride and soak up the coastal atmosphere.

E-Bike Friendly Options

The Trail Is Perfect for E-Bikes
The entire Twin Coast Cycle Trail is suitable for e-bikes, making it accessible for a wide range of riders. With mostly gentle gradients and well-maintained surfaces, you can enjoy the coast-to-coast journey without worrying about steep climbs or long days in the saddle.
Plan Ahead for Charging
Most e-bike batteries will easily last for a single day’s ride, but if you’re tackling the full trail over two days, it’s a good idea to plan charging stops. We can help you work out where to recharge and recommend local accommodation that offers secure overnight charging.
